From Svislach to Kletzk
Rabbi Aharon was born in 1892 in Svislach (Sislevitch), near Minsk and learned in Slabodka [1]. Already as a young man he was known as a genius and became rosh yeshiva in Kletzk [1].
A yeshiva in America
He reached America in 1941, and in 1943 opened a yeshiva in Lakewood, New Jersey, with a small group of students [1]. His idea was new for America: Torah for its own sake, not for a diploma. People said it would never last there. Today tens of thousands learn in Lakewood.
Chinuch Atzmai
He also led Chinuch Atzmai, which set up Torah schools in Eretz Yisroel [1]. He passed away in 1962, and his son Rabbi Shneur Kotler succeeded him [1].
