From Kalvarija to Slabodka

Rabbi Yaakov was born in 1891 and learned in Slabodka [1], where he was a friend of Rabbi Aharon Kotler; both later helped build the yeshiva world in America.

Rav and rosh yeshiva

He became rabbi of Tzitevian, Lithuania, in 1926, came to North America in 1937, first to Seattle and from 1938 to 1945 Toronto [1]. From 1948 to 1968 he was rosh yeshiva of Torah Vodaath [1], so Brooklyn, home of the chasidim, had a piece of Lithuania too.

Emes L'Yaakov

His "Emes L'Yaakov" on Chumash and Shas is known for simple, wise insights [1]. He spent his last years in Monsey and passed away in 1986 [1].
