Devorah sat under a palm tree between Ramah and Beis El, and Israel came to her for judgment (Shoftim 4:4–5). When Yavin king of Canaan oppressed Israel, she summoned Barak son of Avinoam and told him to fight Sisera, Yavin's general, at Mount Tavor (4:6–16).

After the victory Devorah and Barak sang the Song of Devorah (ch. 5), read as the haftarah of Parshas Beshalach. 'The land was quiet forty years' (5:31). Chazal count her among the seven prophetesses (Megillah 14a).
