Miriam was the sister of Moshe and Aharon. When Moshe lay in the basket in the river, she stood at a distance to see what would happen to him (Shemos 2:4).

After the splitting of the sea the Torah calls her 'Miriam the prophetess' (15:20–21). Later she spoke about Moshe and was punished with tzaraas; the Jews waited for her seven days (Bamidbar 12). From this comes the command to remember 'what Hashem did to Miriam' (Devarim 24:9).

Miriam died at Kadesh (Bamidbar 20:1). Chazal say the well in the desert was in her merit (Taanis 9a).
