Moshe was the son of Amram and Yocheved, of the tribe of Levi (Shemos 6:20). When Pharaoh ordered the boys thrown into the river, he was placed in a basket in the Nile, and Pharaoh's daughter drew him out and raised him (2:1–10).
At the burning bush Hashem sent him to Pharaoh (ch. 3). He led the Jews out of Egypt, through the splitting of the sea, and at Sinai received the Torah and the Luchos. For 40 years he led the people in the desert. Because of the waters of Merivah he was not allowed to enter the Land (Bamidbar 20:12).
Moshe died at 120 on Mount Nevo, and 'no one knows his burial place' (Devarim 34:5–7). The Torah ends: 'No prophet like Moshe has arisen again in Israel' (34:10). Chazal say he was born and died on 7 Adar (Megillah 13b).
