Shmuel was the son of Elkanah and Chana of Ramasayim Tzofim. Chana prayed long for a child at the Mishkan in Shiloh, and when Shmuel was born she gave him to serve Hashem under Eli the Kohen (I Shmuel 1–3).

Shmuel became a prophet and judge for all Israel. When the people asked for a king he anointed Shaul (10:1), and later Dovid (16:13).

Shmuel died and was buried in Ramah (25:1). The verse places him with Moshe and Aharon: 'Moshe and Aharon among His priests, and Shmuel among those who call His name' (Tehillim 99:6). The Gemara says he wrote his book, Shoftim and Rus (Bava Basra 14b).
