Dovid was the youngest son of Yishai of Beis Lechem, of the tribe of Yehuda. Shmuel anointed him king while he was still a shepherd (I Shmuel 16:1–13). He killed Golyas the Philistine (ch. 17) and for years fled from King Shaul.

Dovid reigned seven years in Chevron and 33 in Jerusalem (II Shmuel 5:4–5). He conquered Jerusalem (5:7) and brought the Aron into the city (ch. 6). He wanted to build the Beis HaMikdash, but Hashem said his son would build it (ch. 7).

He is called 'the sweet singer of Israel' (23:1) and composed Sefer Tehillim. King Dovid died at 70 (I Melachim 2:10–11; II Shmuel 5:4). The prophets say Moshiach will come from his line (Yeshayahu 11:1).
