Golyas of Gath was a giant Philistine — 'six cubits and a span' tall — in bronze armor (I Shmuel 17:4–7). For 40 days he challenged Israel to single combat and taunted 'the armies of the living G-d' (17:8–16, 26).

Young Dovid faced him with a sling and five smooth stones: 'You come with a sword... I come in the name of Hashem of hosts.' The first stone struck his forehead, and Dovid cut off his head with Golyas's own sword (17:40–51).
