Eliyahu the Tishbite, from Gilad, told King Achav there would be no rain (I Melachim 17:1). Ravens brought him food (17:6), and he revived the widow's son in Tzarfas (17:17–24).

On Mount Carmel he challenged the prophets of Baal; fire came down from heaven and the people cried 'Hashem is G-d' (18:39). At Chorev he heard the 'still, small voice' (19:12). He anointed Elisha as his disciple and went up 'in a storm to heaven' in a fiery chariot (II Melachim 2:11).

The prophet Malachi says: 'Behold I send you Eliyahu the prophet before the coming of the day of Hashem' (Malachi 3:23). A 'cup of Eliyahu' is set at the Seder, and a 'chair of Eliyahu' at a bris.
