Challah חלה
The braided Shabbos bread, centerpiece of every Shabbos and Yom Tov table.
Edit / add infoChallah is the special, usually braided bread eaten on Shabbos and major holidays (other than Pesach and Yom Kippur). Two loaves recall the double portion of manna. The word is biblical, meaning "loaf," and also refers to the dough offering separated from the batch; in Central Europe it was called berches. Chassidic homes bake many shapes, from round Rosh Hashanah loaves to the shlissel challah after Pesach.
