Gefilte Fish געפילטע פיש
The classic Shabbos fish appetizer, topped with a carrot slice and served with chrain.
Fix / add informationGefilte fish ("stuffed fish") is a poached mixture of ground, deboned fish such as carp, whitefish or pike, traditionally served as an Ashkenazi appetizer on Shabbos and Yom Tov, garnished with a slice of carrot. Historically it was a whole fish stuffed with forcemeat inside its skin; by the 16th century cooks began making just the patties. The sweet (Polish) versus peppery (Litvish) style is a famous friendly debate.
