Elisha son of Shafat was plowing when Eliyahu cast his mantle on him; he followed and served Eliyahu (I Melachim 19:19–21). When Eliyahu ascended, Elisha asked for 'a double portion of your spirit' and received his mantle (II Melachim 2).

Sefer Melachim tells of his miracles: the jug of oil that kept flowing (4:1–7), reviving the Shunammite's son (4:8–37), and the healing of Naaman, the Aramean general (ch. 5). Elisha died in the days of Yoash king of Israel (13:14–20).
