Avraham Avinu is the first of the Avos. He recognized Hashem in a world of idol worship, and Hashem made a covenant with him.

Avraham (first 'Avram') was the son of Terach, from Ur Kasdim (Bereishis 11:26–31). Hashem told him 'Lech lecha' — go to the land of Canaan — and promised he would become a great nation (12:1–3).

Hashem made the Covenant between the Parts with him (ch. 15); at 99 he was circumcised and his name was changed to Avraham (ch. 17). He is known for hospitality, as with the three angels (ch. 18). At 100 Yitzchak was born (21:5), and then came the Akeidah (ch. 22). He bought Me'aras HaMachpela in Chevron (ch. 23).

Avraham died at 175 and was buried in the Machpela (25:7–9). The Mishnah says he was tested with ten trials (Avos 5:3). Chazal say he instituted Shacharis (Berachos 26b).
