From Zhagory to Salant

Rabbi Yisroel Lipkin was born in 1810 in Zhagory, Lithuania. He was called "Salanter" because he learned in Salant under Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant, who showed him how seriously one must take working on oneself [1].

Mussar for every Jew

In Vilna and later Kovno, Rabbi Yisroel launched his movement: learn mussar books daily, with a tune and feeling, so the words reach the heart [1]. He set up mussar study houses for ordinary working men, not only scholars.

A famous story: during a severe cholera epidemic in Vilna in 1848, he instructed people to eat on Yom Kippur to protect their health, and ate on the bimah himself so no one would be embarrassed [1].

His students

His students, such as the Alter of Kelm, Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv, and Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer, carried the mussar path onward [1]. He passed away in 1883 in Königsberg. Nearly every Lithuanian yeshiva today has a mussar seder and a shmuess, his direct legacy.
