The Alter of Kelm

Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv, one of the greatest students of Rabbi Yisroel Salanter, founded the "Talmud Torah" in Kelm, Lithuania, in the 1860s to strengthen mussar study [1]. He did not seek large numbers; he wanted to train individuals who would truly work on their middos [1].

A yeshiva of order and mussar

Unlike other yeshivas, the Kelm Talmud Torah focused mainly on mussar and self-improvement [1]. Kelm was known for great order and precision in everything. The Alter passed away in 1898, and his brother Rabbi Aryeh Leib Broida took over [1].

Its influence

Kelm's students were few, but many later became mashgichim and roshei yeshiva across the Litvish world [1]. It is said that a Kelmer said even "good morning" with a cheshbon hanefesh.
