The Alter of Novardok
In 1896 a yeshiva was established in Novardok (Novogrudok) under the direction of Rabbi Yosef Yozel Horowitz, known as "the Alter of Novardok" [1]. He brought into it a strong, fiery mussar: working on oneself, not fearing what the world says, and doing everything for the sake of Heaven [1].
Hundreds of yeshivos
Novardok did not stay one yeshiva. It was the first of hundreds of mussar yeshivas, all called Novardok yeshivas, [1]. In Poland all Novardok yeshivas carried the name "Beis Yosef", in honour of the Alter, and the Bialystok yeshiva alone supervised thirty others [1].
The Novardok way
A Novardok bochur was known for the "birzhe", talking mussar together and strengthening one another, and for exercises to break pride. A Chasid would say: "Novardok? It's like a tish, just without the kugel."
