History
Lavan לבן הארמי
Lavan was Rivka's brother and the uncle and father-in-law of Yaakov, the father of Rochel and Leah.
Fix / add informationLavan, son of Besuel and brother of Rivka, lived in Charan in Aram. He first appears running out to greet Eliezer when Eliezer comes to take Rivka for Yitzchak (Bereishis 24:29).
Yaakov fled to Lavan and worked seven years for Rochel. At the wedding Lavan gave him Leah instead (29:23–25), and Yaakov worked seven more years for Rochel. Yaakov says Lavan changed his wages ten times (31:7).
When Yaakov left with his family, Lavan chased him to Mount Gilad. Hashem warned Lavan in a dream not to harm Yaakov (31:24), and they made a covenant at Gal-Ed (31:44–48).
The Pesach Haggadah says: 'Go and learn what Lavan the Aramean sought to do to Yaakov... Lavan sought to uproot everything', explaining 'Arami oved avi' (Devarim 26:5; Rashi there).
