Kayin worked the land and Hevel was a shepherd. Both brought offerings; Hashem accepted Hevel's — 'from the firstborn of his flock and their fat' — and not Kayin's (Bereishis 4:2–5).

Kayin rose up against Hevel and killed him. When Hashem asked 'Where is Hevel your brother?' he answered 'Am I my brother's keeper?' He was punished to be 'a wanderer on the earth' (4:8–16). Later Adam had another son, Sheis, 'for G-d has given me another seed in place of Hevel' (4:25).
