History
Gidon (Gideon) גדעון
Gidon son of Yoash was a judge of Israel who defeated Midian with 300 men.
Fix / add informationGidon son of Yoash, of Menashe, lived when Midian oppressed Israel. An angel told him 'Hashem is with you, mighty warrior', and he tore down the altar of Baal in his father's town (Shoftim 6).
Hashem had him reduce his army to 300 men so the victory would be seen as Hashem's. At night they blew shofars, broke jars with torches, and cried 'A sword for Hashem and for Gidon', and Midian fled (ch. 7). He refused to be king: 'I will not rule over you... Hashem will rule over you' (8:23).
