Esther, also called Hadassah, was an orphan raised by Mordechai (Esther 2:7). She was taken to the palace and Achashverosh made her queen; at Mordechai's instruction she did not reveal her people (2:10, 16–17).

When Haman's decree came out she asked all the Jews of Shushan to fast three days, saying 'If I perish, I perish' (4:16). She went to the king unbidden, made two feasts, and there exposed Haman's plot (chs. 5–7). With Mordechai she wrote the Megillah and established Purim (9:29–32). Chazal count her among the seven prophetesses (Megillah 14a).
