Shabbos morning, a father walks to shul with his tallis bag in hand, pushing a stroller. How can one carry in the street on Shabbos? The answer is an eruv. But what is it really?

The Four Domains

In halacha, places on Shabbos are divided into four kinds: reshus hayachid (like a house), reshus harabim (like a very busy road), karmelis (most other places), and makom patur. As Wikipedia notes, a domain is defined by its enclosure, not its ownership.

The National Eruv Initiative explains: the Torah (Shemos 16) forbids carrying in a reshus harabim and from a reshus harabim to a reshus hayachid. Chazal also forbade carrying in a karmelis — but they also gave a way to turn a karmelis into a reshus hayachid. That is the eruv.

What Is an Eruv Made Of?

According to the Eruv Initiative there are three main components:

  • The area: it must be determined that an eruv can be made there — no reshus harabim inside, and no "karpef."
  • The enclosure: the area is surrounded with walls and with "doorways" — tzuras hapesach. Two poles are the doorposts and a wire on top is the lintel. In a city, existing telephone poles and wires are often used.
  • Unifying the residents: eruv chatzeros — food is set aside for all the Jewish residents (usually matzah, replaced each year), and schirus makom, renting rights from the non-Jewish residents.

The Weekly Check

An eruv must be checked every week and repaired before sunset on Friday. If a wire breaks, the eruv may not be valid that Shabbos. That is why eruv organizations keep a hotline or website that tells the community on Friday afternoon whether the eruv is up.

An example: the Los Angeles Community Eruv shows the status on its website every week, with that week's repairs, and you can subscribe to get the notice. Until it is checked, the site reads "The Eruv is Unchecked."

Why Do Some Not Carry?

There are different views of what makes a "reshus harabim." By one view, a street 16 amos wide is a reshus harabim; by another, 600,000 people must also pass through in one day. Most communities follow the second, but in large cities more than 600,000 people may pass through certain streets. And a tzuras hapesach only helps when the area is not a reshus harabim d'oraisa.

So, as the Eruv Initiative writes, eruvin involve many opinions, and every question should be asked of a posek. Everyone follows his rav — with shalom and achdus.
