Yehuda was born to Yaakov and Leah, who said 'This time I will thank Hashem' (Bereishis 29:35). He proposed selling Yosef instead of killing him (37:26–27). In the episode with Tamar he publicly admitted: 'She is more righteous than I' (38:26).

He was guarantor for Binyomin, and in Egypt he approached Yosef — 'Vayigash' — offering to remain a slave in Binyomin's place (44:18–34). Yaakov blessed him with kingship: 'The scepter shall not depart from Yehuda' (49:8–10). King Dovid is from Yehuda.
