A shtreimel is a fur hat worn by some Ashkenazi Jewish men, mainly chassidim, on Shabbos, holidays and festive occasions; in Jerusalem some Litvish Jews wear it too. It is generally worn after marriage, though in some communities boys wear it after bar mitzvah. Traditionally the father-in-law buys it for the chassan.
