A Shalom Zachar ("welcoming the male") is a gathering held in Ashkenazi circles on the first Friday night after a baby boy is born. Though by tradition intended to "console" the newborn, it is a happy occasion: friends and neighbors drop by after the meal for l'chaims, singing and a dvar Torah, with the customary boiled chickpeas on the table.
