Reuven ראובן

Reuven was born to Yaakov and Leah, the firstborn (Bereishis 29:32). When the brothers wanted to kill Yosef, Reuven persuaded them to throw him into a pit so he could rescue him later (37:21–22).

In his blessing Yaakov calls him 'my firstborn, my strength', but 'unstable as water, you shall not excel' (49:3–4). The tribe of Reuven received its portion east of the Yarden (Bamidbar 32).
