History
Esav (Esau) עשיו הרשע
Esav was the son of Yitzchak and Rivka and the twin brother of Yaakov.
Fix / add informationEsav was the son of Yitzchak and Rivka and the twin brother of Yaakov. He is the forefather of Edom.
Esav was the son of Yitzchak and Rivka and Yaakov's twin. He was born first, ruddy and hairy (Bereishis 25:25).
The Torah calls him 'a skilled hunter, a man of the field' (25:27). One day he came in tired and sold his birthright to Yaakov for red lentil stew; 'Esav despised the birthright' (25:29–34). From this he got the name Edom.
Later Yaakov received Yitzchak's blessings; Esav hated him and planned to kill him (27:41), and Yaakov fled to Lavan. When Yaakov returned, Esav came toward him with 400 men (32:7) and they met (ch. 33). Esav settled in Mount Seir, and his descendants became the nation of Edom (ch. 36). His grandson was Amalek (36:12).
Chazal say that on the day Avraham died, Esav committed five grave sins (Bava Basra 16b). Rashi explains that he 'trapped' his father with his mouth, posing as righteous (Rashi on 25:27). In Chazal Edom is linked with Rome and the final exile.
