Dan was the first son of Yaakov and Bilhah and father of the tribe of Dan.

Dan was born to Yaakov and Bilhah, Rochel's maidservant; Rochel said 'G-d has judged me' (Bereishis 30:5–6). Yaakov blessed him: 'Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel' (49:16).
Shimshon was from the tribe of Dan (Shoftim 13:2). The Gemara relates that Chushim son of Dan stopped Esav at Yaakov's burial (Sotah 13a).
