What is a chavrusa

Chavrusa is learning in which two people, or a small group, study a sugya together, debating, asking and answering [1]. In yeshivos and kollelim it is the main way of learning, and a bochur usually has a fixed chavrusa for each seder [1]. One prepares for the shiur with the chavrusa and reviews it together afterwards [1].

Why in pairs

Unlike a classroom where the teacher talks and students listen, each partner must think for himself, point out the other's errors, and defend his view [1]. "Either chavrusa or misusa," says the Gemara: either a friend to learn with, or it is like not living.

The sound of the beis medrash

Anyone who has walked into a Litvish beis medrash knows it is not quiet. Hundreds of chavrusas talk at once, with hands, thumbs, "but!" and "nu, you hear?". A Chasid walking in thinks something happened. Nothing happened; they're just learning. And two chavrusas who argued over a Rashi are best friends at the cholent.
