Chai Lifeline was founded in 1987 by Rabbi Simcha Scholar to help families of children battling life-threatening illness. Its early guidance came from Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, and its first focus was Jewish pediatric cancer patients in New York.

Its goal is to "restore the light of childhood" to children whose lives were upended by illness. Much of its work relies on volunteers, including former recipients of its help. Its Camp Simcha, a 125-acre campus in Glen Spey, New York, gives children with cancer a joyful summer. It has expanded across the U.S. and to Israel, Canada and Europe.
