Shem was one of Noach's three sons (Bereishis 5:32). After the Flood, when Noach lay uncovered, Shem and Yefes covered him respectfully, and Noach blessed 'Blessed is Hashem, the G-d of Shem' (9:23–26).

Avraham descends from Shem, ten generations later (11:10–26). Chazal teach that Malki-Tzedek, king of Shalem, who brought bread and wine to Avraham (14:18), was Shem (Nedarim 32b), and Rashi brings that Yaakov learned 14 years in the study hall of Shem and Ever (Rashi Bereishis 28:9).

Disputed or unverified

That Malki-Tzedek is Shem is a teaching of Chazal (Nedarim 32b), not an explicit verse.
