Kiryas Joel ("KJ") is a village coterminous with the Town of Palm Tree in Orange County, NY; most residents are Yiddish-speaking Satmar Chasidim. It is named for Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, the Satmar Rebbe, driving spirit behind the project. It began in 1977 with about 500 people; the 2020 census counted 32,954. "Palm Tree" is a translation of "Teitelbaum" (teitel = date palm, baum = tree). It has the youngest population of any U.S. municipality (median age 14.4 in 2020; 58.7% under 18). The village covers just 1.1 square miles, with a small duck pond, Forest Road Lake, at its center.
