Gad was the first son of Yaakov and Zilpah and father of the tribe of Gad.

Gad was born to Yaakov and Zilpah, Leah's maidservant; Leah said 'Good fortune has come' (Bereishis 30:9–11). Yaakov blessed him: 'Gad, a troop shall troop upon him, but he shall troop upon their heel' (49:19).
Gad, with Reuven and half of Menashe, asked for land east of the Yarden because of their many cattle, promising to lead in battle (Bamidbar 32).
