Eliakum Zunser, known as Eliakum Badchen, was born on October 28, 1840 in Vilna and died on September 22, 1913. He grew up poor and worked from a young age.

He became one of the most famous badchanim of his time, a Yiddish poet and songwriter with roughly 600 songs, about a quarter of which survive. He spent his last years in the United States, and a 1905 New York Times article called him "the father of Yiddish poetry".
