On June 27, 1976 terrorists from a Palestinian group and two Germans hijacked an Air France plane flying from Tel Aviv to Paris and took it to Entebbe, Uganda, with the help of dictator Idi Amin.

There the terrorists separated the passengers: non-Jews were released, while the Israeli and Jewish passengers and the crew were held.

The Mossad and intelligence gathered information from released passengers and about the airport. On the night of July 3–4, four Israeli Hercules planes landed at Entebbe. In about an hour the hostages were freed and flown back to Israel.

Three hostages were killed during the rescue and one more later in Uganda. The commander, Yoni Netanyahu, fell; the operation was later named Operation Yonatan.
