Eli (Eliyahu) Cohen was born in Egypt in 1924 and moved to Israel in 1957. The Mossad trained him and sent him to Argentina, where he posed as a Syrian merchant named "Kamel Amin Thaabet", and from there he moved to Damascus.

In Damascus he befriended senior officers and politicians and sent Israel important information, including on Syrian positions on the Golan Heights. According to many reports, it helped in the Six-Day War of 1967.

In January 1965 the Syrians caught him while transmitting. After a trial he was executed in Damascus on May 18, 1965. His body has still not been returned to Israel.

In 2018 the Mossad brought back his watch, and later more items from his archive.
