The Torah says Yaakov set up a monument on Rochel's grave; the domed building known today is much later, and Sir Moses Montefiore restored and expanded it in 1841 and 1845.

The Torah says Yaakov set up a monument on Rochel's grave (Bereishis 35:20), which some see as the source of the Jewish custom of a headstone. The building there today is not from Yaakov's time: travelers described structures at the site from the 4th century, and the familiar domed building is believed to date from the 15th century. In 1841 and 1845 Sir Moses Montefiore financed its restoration and expansion, adding an antechamber.
