Chinuch Atzmai: how the Gedolim built Torah education in Eretz Yisroel חינוך עצמאי: ווי אזוי די גדולים האבן געבויט א תורה חינוך אין ארץ ישראל
The history of Chinuch Atzmai, the Charedi school network in Israel founded in 1953 to save the Torah education of thousands of Jewish children.
Fix / add informationChinuch Atzmai is the Charedi school network in Israel, established in 1953. In the state's first years, many religious immigrant children in the transit camps were steered into secular schools against their parents' wishes. With the State Education Law of August 1953, the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah secured recognition of an independent network, partly state-funded but independent. Its first chairman was Rav Zalman Sorotzkin, the Lutzker Rav. The Chazon Ish saw the danger of state-run education; in America Rav Aharon Kotler built the Friends of Chinuch Atzmai; later Rav Shach, Rav Elyashiv and Rav Shteinman guided it. Rav Tzvi Shraga Grossbard directed Chinuch Atzmai for 25 years from 1967; his yahrtzeit is 13 Cheshvan.
